With a little creativity, you can still have a great summer. Even one worth remembering.
We have everything it takes. In fact, with a little reframing, you’ll see most of it you can’t even stop! To start with, the parts that simply feel like summer.
What’s the first thing about summer you notice?
Maybe the longer days?
The warmer ones don’t hurt the case either.
For me, there’s something about summer that allows us to take life at a more relaxed pace. To throttle back at least a notch or two. That’s still here.
Adam Grant, a leading expert on the world of work believes that stepped back work demands will become a benefit stemming from the pandemic.
Short sleeves and tee shirts have come out of your closets. Dressing up is now as easy as putting on a polo shirt. Shorts are acceptable for almost any occasion. Jacket required usually means a windbreaker because nights are cooler at the beach.
Can you recall what you love most about summer?
Think about it for a moment. Now, just how much of that will you have to forego this year?
Hardly any of it, right? Maybe a few ballgames, some big concerts, maybe a few other traditions. Sure, that part stinks. But they’ll be back in due time.
In the meantime, much smaller events are popping up all over the place.
But what about my vacation?
Sure, we’ve all had those amazing vacations at one time or another and I’m allowing myself to dream about taking one again sometime soon… but not this summer.
Other than that, nothing is so different about this year that won’t allow you to make your own perfect memories.
How? Obvious exceptions aside… my experience has always been that although a traditional summer vacation is well worth taking, they usually aren’t where you find the magic moments.
Close your eyes for a moment and let your mind wander barefoot through a balmy summer breeze.
Now tell me… where did it take you?
Catching up with friends?
Grilling outdoors?
That one precious afternoon in a hammock?
The point is this… we usually stumble upon the best moments of summer. They are rarely planned, and never manufactured. Remember that amazing sunset when you weren’t even looking for a sunset?
Here’s my summer challenge for you—
Lose yourself in the laziness of at least one toasty warm summer afternoon. Allow yourself to completely and entirely lose track of time. Experience the stillness. Feel every breeze.
Make it last all-afternoon-long, and then some.
You have approximately ninety afternoons over the summer months to make this… no, let this happen. We can even stretch the rules for you enough to allow summer to spill over into September. But only if you must, only if absolutely necessary.
Let’s always remember what we learned from the lockdown.
This is the takeaway…
Being together with family and friends is what matters most in this life.
Having a home, a safe place to live is more important than having places to go.
It’s your experiences that will make your summer a summer to remember. More often than not, the little things make the moment.
Every summer has moments that are right… when everything’s in sync.
There’s no explaining them either. We know how they feel when they’re happening, and when they’re gone.
Don’t let them slip away this year. Tell the boss to go get a damn life… you’ll be back in the fall. You’ve got a challenge to meet.
Relax. Get lost. Be untucked.

As always, very insightful, especially liked the””let it go and breath” moments.
Yeah, here on Chincoteague Island, VA, our festivals, Fourth of July fireworks, carnival, Pony Swim and live auction are canceled, we will enjoy the simple things of our summer.
We are healthy and blessed.

Thanks for reading, Lou!
We’ve got to keep the ‘healthy and blessed’ part front of mind (and heart). We’ll miss those big events for sure. But you’ve got it right… ‘we will enjoy the simple things.’
Be well

Well-timed and insightful, as always, Jeff. A good reminder for those of us who use stress as an indicator of our worth.
BTW, really like “‘Jackets Required’ usually means a windbreaker because nights are cooler at the beach.”
Good job, Jeff.

Thanks, Tim! You are right, we can’t let our current situation become another reason to work more. I appreciate your comment.
