Isn’t it great being a flawed human?
Really… that’s a serious question.
Those lovely flaws are what make you, well… you.
They’re what make you pick the green one, or why you really like purple, but don’t know why.
They make you cry at weddings, even though you’re the guest of a guest.
Flaws are why you bounce the ball three times, and only three times before you serve.
Did you know you make a very weird face whenever you sign your name?
God knows I’m not perfect, either. I’ve made tons of stupid mistakes, and later I regretted them. And I’ve done it over and over again, thousands of times; a cycle of hollow joy and vicious self-hatred. But even so, every time I learned something about myself.” –Misato Katsuragi
Great quote, right? It really speaks to the point of where I’m headed. Katsuragi must be quite the self-aware person? Well, not so fast…
My gut was telling me I should find out who this person is before I quote her. She could be a serial killer or something.
It turns out that Misato Katsuragi is a fictional character from the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise created by Gainax. (Thank you, Google).
If she were the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi or Gandalf, I probably wouldn’t have given it a second thought. But, since she’s not my superhero, I’m a little embarrassed I didn’t know. (Flaw)
Now that I think about it for a moment, we’ve been learning from fictional characters for eons, haven’t we?
Okay, back to those flaws…
They’re why life isn’t boring, they keep things interesting.
Your flaws give you something to strive for. They are also why Amazon knows you like to read trashy novels.
And it’s why Netflix is very confused because Lanette and I share the same profile. Imagine the algorithm grinding on Downtown Abbey meets The Big Lebowski.
Yes, I know it’s Downton. I prefer to refer to it as “Downtown” because I don’t know what a downton is. (Flaw) I just checked it on Dictionary.com… It asked me, “Did you mean downtown?”
See. No such thing. Told ya’! (Yet another flaw)
Remember, our humanity is the secret ingredient. You see, we shouldn’t fear our robot avatars taking over the world. Real human life forms will keep the world on its toes… make it what it is.
Do you know why you can love roller coasters, but still have to wait for the little green walky-guy before you can cross the street?
Yes, FLAWS…
They’re why the Red Sox lost this time because you lost your lucky cap to a wind gust at the beach.
They’re why the answer is clearly, “dogs.” Actually, that one is always true.
It’s why you know the answer… even when you don’t. Ponder that one for a moment.
It’s why you’re the only one who can load the dishwasher the right way, but you see the value in letting others do it the wrong way. (Learning experience).
It’s why you do one thing a certain way because that’s the way Mom did it, but you’ll never, ever do something else that way because that’s the way Mom made you do it fifty-thousand-times.
It’s why some lessons in life take only once to learn while others… well, you’ve got to keep learning them over, and over again.
It’s why you know without question, that you’ve found the very best craft brew on the planet, but you’ll still keep searching for one better, even in the face of certain regret.
It’s why you’ll argue to the end of the earth that it’s clearly Rolling Stones over the Beatles. (Fact)
Or why you believe saying it just a little bit louder this time will make it all the more convincing.
“Oh, I see your point now. Thank you for that additional clarity.”
But for those times we know we’re wrong, but we do it anyway. (To be clear, here… I’m talking chocolate chip cookies, not bank robberies).
And, when there’s no other reason than… because we want to.
As long are there are imperfect humans, let the robots drive the cars.
They will make better choices because they won’t throw a fit when some other robot car gets a car length ahead.
That’s a part I’m actually looking forward to.
Until then, let’s embrace those flaws… They’re what make you a quirky, cool human. And they keep life fun.

Thanks Jeff for continuing your posts, I hadn’t seen one for a while….that very well may have been one of my flaws!

It’s that Facebook algorithm… not everything makes it into the feed. Thanks for reading!

Dogs are clearly the answer….:-) Love it!
Flaws? Absolutely and many and thanks for the reminder that it makes so much of everything worthwhile.
Cheers!

The best advice I’ve come across in a long time is to stop worrying about your weaknesses (which = flaws). Cheers, Pat!
