“Hope your construction is going smoothly”–John
Do you ever feel like random messages fall from the sky when you need to hear them most?
Last week my brother-in-law, John, emailed me a Zillow listing of a rather “unique and private hideaway” here in New Mexico.
Joking around as he likes to do, his first line went like this, “We’re thinking of buying this house. Would you check out the neighborhood for us?”
Of course, I would, it’s nearby after all.
Then he closes sincerely with his second line…
“Hope your construction is going smoothly. What an exciting time in your lives!” –John
BOOM! Whoa! Wow! Did I ever need to hear that!
I have to say that again–out loud… What-an-exciting-time-in-your-lives!
I sat there for several minutes just to let that line soak in. Why? Because I had let myself forget how amazingly wonderful this time has been for us. In the past year and a half, Lanette and I have…
- Realized a dream fifteen years in the making by moving to Santa Fe,
- Broken ground on our dream home we expect to finish late in the Spring,
- Made so many wonderful new friends,
- Joined the most unbelievably comfortable, eclectic, and authentic church,
- Forgotten what 95 degrees with 95% humidity feels like,
- Soaked-up about a thousand amazing sunsets (don’t do the math), and
- I won’t go on, but I could for I don’t know how long.
Yes, the roads have been bumpy—figuratively and literally!
Sure, not everything has turned out as expected. But, you know what—so much has turned out even better!
And to respond to John’s wish for the construction to go smoothly, I’m happy to report it is! Sometimes I let myself get all stressed out that it’s also going sooo slowly. What you’ve been hearing reported in the news about building a house in the time of COVID is all pretty much true.
We can let ourselves get all wrapped up in supply chain problems, rising material costs, labor shortages, falling stock markets, higher interest rates, and what have you.
Or we can truly embrace this most exciting time in our lives.
Because it’s our choice. And why not make the good choice? It sure beats all the alternatives I can think of at the moment.
And for the construction going smoothly, and well, slowly… We’ll strive to keep in perspective that this project is a series of choices, workarounds, problems to solve, sheer joy, disappointments, thrills, heartbreaks, and marks to leave on one of the best creative efforts and collaborations we’ll ever undertake.
As our builder likes to say, “We’re working all the edges and angles.”
(You know, we actually love our builder!)
Thanks, John—for reminding me that this really is an amazing time for us. And yes, life is good.

What an encouraging — and TIMELY — post. (Especially about finding a church, something we still need to ‘check off our list.’) (Trying to remember that list checking is a source of discontent!)
So glad for both or you, my friend!

Hmmm… I check my lists all the time! Thanks for the encouraging comment, Tim!

This is an exciting time for all you are doing together! Especially your relationship! Keep things in perspective and if you veer off your path hold fast to someone who can right your ship. It will be worth every penny and every moment! Wishing you well during this process!
