Some while back, a very long while back in fact, I was getting to know a new friend. We were taking about the usual getting acquainted sort of things. You know, what do you do, where do you work, do you like cats or dogs?
Then she hits me with, “What’s you thing?”
“My thing?”
“Yeah, your thing!”
“What do you mean, my ‘thing’?”
She explains, “Well, my thing is singing. I’m a soloist at church. I sing other places too, whenever I can. It’s my thing. I love doing it and I guard my time for it carefully.” (I think that was a warning).
“I guess my thing would be volleyball. I play volleyball three or four nights a week.”
That’s what I did a lot back then. That was my “thing” so I found out. I had never really thought of it like that.
What’s your thing?
Everyone should have his or her “thing.” You should have at least one. You can have more than one, or two, or however many you want for that matter. But, have at least one… something you really like to do. Something that fills you up.
Remember when you were a kid? You probably went from one thing to another. Trying things out, trying them on so see if they fit. It was all part of the journey. Part of learning.
But slowly, as we grew up, and settled into the demands of a grown-up world. Many of our things became casualties of a busy life. Work, home, or softball league? The league loses every time.
Back to that conversation with my new friend. It sounded odd to me at the time that she would say something like, “I guard my time for it carefully.” I felt as if I were put on notice. Warned. Stay back. Maybe she knew something? I’ll be she’s still singing.
Life is made up of demands from all directions. Demands to accept, reject, or give in to. Start by saving space for one of your own.
What’s your thing?
