Seth Godin’s post today is titled “Summer’s almost over.” A memory of my mom immediately came to mind. I could hear her saying those exact words about this time every year…
Summer’s almost over.” – Mom
As I started to read… BAM! He was sharing the exact same memory. I guess that’s what moms do.
Don’t waste the rest of the summer lying around, doing nothing.” – Mom, again
That was B.V. of course (before videogames) when we literally would have nothing to do. Literally.
It sounded like good advice… to her maybe. Some days I think she was more honest with this mantra…
Get out of the house!” – Mom, yet again.
This is Seth’s message,
Summer is a great time to stand back, to chill out, to spend an entire day or a week producing little or nothing and simply breathe.” – Seth Godin
We shouldn’t let it slip by. I know, grown-ups have jobs, and responsibilities, and …zzzzzzzzzz
My take? It was true then, and it’s true now. It’s good for the body. It’s good for the head. It’s good for the heart. And, it’s good for the soul.
No, it’s not a prescription for every day. Although I expect some push-back from some on that one.
And for all of the uber-success-junkie-hyper-performers out there, allow me to point out that Jimmy Buffet built an empire on the idea of taking it easy. And it’s hard to knock how he did it.
If taking it easy isn’t for you… even once in a while. Go ahead with your 4:30 am CrossFit workout and your paleo breakfast and the rest of your three-hour morning startup routine that you wedge in before your 6:00 am meeting with your venture-capitalist investors while simultaneously multi-tasking out fifty pages of marketing copy while having a latte with your business partner. I-am-so-inspired.
This is not summer. This is not life.
For the less ambitious, do you usually just let things unfold? That’s cool, but remember even Jimmy Buffet had to schedule his concerts. If unfolding works, that’s great. I will admit, it’s how some of the best fun, and trouble, happen!
Wouldn’t doing one more summer thing be a great way to honor the love and spirit of “Summer-Mom”? (You read Super-Mom, didn’t you?)
But why just one? It’s not over. Not yet. There is plenty of time… a whole month for goodness sake.
Take that vacation already!
A good “Plan B” – Can’t stand the idea of going to a beach packed with people and screaming kiddos? (We get enough of that from the McMansion in the neighborhood behind us.)
September is a great beach time. Yes, you would be getting a pass from this end-of summer thing… but it still gets the job done. (Later. The job comes later.)
Tick. Tick. Tick. The North Wind is coming.
