Summers have a way of accelerating time, don’t they?
This morning when I grabbed my phone, I was blown away. At least momentarily, that is. There it was at the top of my home screen. I simply was not prepared for what I saw—
“Thursday, September 1”
What happened to August? Heck, what happened to June? And where did July go?
How did you react to seeing today’s date? For me, it was a shocker. Even though most everyone I’ve been talking to since about late June has agreed on one thing (and one thing only)…
This year, summer has been clipping by at an unbelievable pace.
Why does summer always feel like a YouTube video on an amped-up playback speed? Do you experience the same thing?
Plus, it reminds me of this quote by Gretchen Rubin—
The days are long, but the years are short.”
—Gretchen Rubin, author
Isn’t that the truth? Most days feel like they’re about a day long. Then think back a few months or a year and it seems like only yesterday. Weird. The years are definitely short.
Somewhere around late July, we realize time has accelerated through most of summer.
That’s right around the dog days I wrote about a few weeks ago. (You can read that post here). Did you get in one last Hurrah? I hope so because now, this summer is almost a wrap!
This is a good time to share one of the core tenets of LifeUntucked®—
“Enjoy the journey and embrace the seasons of life.”
That takes some intention, flexibility, and a little planning ahead. But, in the end, it’ll be well worth it.
Contemporary culture celebrates youth on the one hand and a destination mindset on the other. We end up resisting our next season rather than embracing it. As a result, we are missing the in-betweens.
And it’s the “in-betweens” that matter!
You know, like with summer, the parts we missed between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Whether it’s a season of the year like summer or a season of life that can last a decade, the reality is that life can get in the way. No, most of the time we let life get in the way.
Sometimes, we wander aimlessly, usually on autopilot… drifting along as time passes us by. Skipping the in-betweens.
An hour, a day… then we blink, letting another summer slip by.
Other times, we get consumed by all the go go go, more more more, now now now, and miss the opportunity to make time for the most meaningful, engaging, fun, life-giving experiences. Our daily routines of life can become rinse and repeat for years at a time. Life isn’t meant to be lived that way!
That’s why when summer feels like it’s accelerating through time, we’ve got to make the in-between moments count. When we do, we end up with a summer of experiences that let us feel like we had a real summer—because we did!
Let’s make the in-betweens count. Sometimes you’ll have to grab them and wrestle with them a bit to make them happen.
Are you with me?
Be untucked.
