What possibly does letting go, being crazy busy and the Olympics have to do with each other anyway?
First off, I’m proposing that letting go is the skill du jour. The one to be aspired to. Like my lack of sentence structure. We can do this.
With all the crazy-busy talk, people might just be coming to terms that it’s time to admit that we can’t do everything. And that might be okay.
We have to learn to let go.
It’s a skill that can be developed, if you work on it.
Trust me, this is all going to be for the better.
And that’s where the Olympics come in…
For as long as I can remember (and that’s getting shorter all the time), when the Olympics come around every two years* most of us find some time to throttle back, find some down time, and take in at least a few of the events.
My favorite Olympic moment so far is Shaun White in the snowboarding half-pipe. He comes out rockin’ with a no-holds-barred first run and leaps into first place with a performance that quietly screams “Beat that.” And Japan’s Ayumu Hirano does just that, in a HUGE way.
Looking like Shaun’s gold medal hopes have just been dashed. He takes a step toward sealing his fate with a lackluster 55.0 on his second run after a brutal fall.
Just when I’m convinced it’s all over, Mr. Sans Carrot-top flops a near impossible, super-human final run scoring him a 97.75 sealing the gold. How awesome was that?
Funny thing, no less than an hour earlier, I revealed a hint of brilliance when I turned to my wife Lanette, and asked… “So, is Shaun White in this one as sort of an elder statesman?” (I seriously said that).
What’s your Olympic heartbeat moment? You’ve gotta have one. Even the craziest of busy have found some time to take in the requisite dose of figure skating.
Water-cooler soundbites don’t get any better than quadruple inverted triple axels
The thing is, when the Olympics come around, it’s an excuse to let things spin down here and there over a couple of weeks and cheer for a dream. A dream that deep down inside, I think we all share. We’ve all got something.
And taking a time-out to feel that again is good therapy for an overstimulated soul.
Maybe for you, it’s not the Olympics. Not your thing? Not a problem, for we have this little thing in the United States known as March Madness.
Same kind of event. Something to get yourself all wrapped up in it for a couple of weeks and escape from the craziness… with a different kind of craziness. The fun kind. The good kind.
Where does the letting go come in?
Okay, if you give it a chance, the relationship isn’t a stretch at all. What I’m see here with the Olympics and March Madness are a couple of traditions that have a way of making an intervention into our many times, insanely busy lives.
There are other things like them that have the same effect.
They give us an excuse to pause. To hit the “let go” button for a couple of weeks when enough other people are jumping in and doing the same.
We have comrades in crime and we have an excuse. An excuse to remove the busyness badge of honor for a while and take a breath.
Make it a deep breath.
Possibly, we’ll even realize there’s something more interesting to talk with our friends and coworkers about than how busy we are.
There may never be time for everything… but, there might be time for enough.
Enough of what?
Enough of the good stuff. And less of the crazy-busy stuff.
See you at the closing ceremony, or maybe at the dance afterwards.
