Harvard psychologist and author, Dan Gilbert says, “Human beings are works in progress that mistakenly think they’re finished.” Isn’t that the truth?
Human Beings Are Works in Progress
Do you ever find humans perplexing? I sure do… these days, it’s an ongoing wonder. Even on our best days, we clearly have a lot more work to do.
Dan’s observation is only the beginning of a very long list of flaws.
We may think we’re different when it comes to matters like this. And if you can be certain of one thing you read today, this is it. Trust me, there’s more work to do. Remember what Dan said, human beings are works in progress.
Human behavior is all over the map. We all see it. And we all have the same perspective in common—it’s not me, it’s the other guy. Hmmm.
Fortunately, a lot of craziness we see every day is purely entertaining.
And then come the scary parts, and there are scary parts!
I read this on LinkedIn today and found it both insightful and amusing… and, at the same time—frighteningly accurate.
We are complicated space monkeys, irrational and messy by some twisted quirk of survival and evolution.”
— Rich Bradbury, a guy on LinkedIn
Read that again. There’s more there than just a clever little quip.
Let me ask you this? When he called us “space monkeys,” did our place in the universe come to mind. Or do you think he’s talking about our collective state of mind? Could be either, you know.
If there’s a lesson in this post, I think the message is this…
- Human beings are works in progress, and we all clearly have more work to do,
- Don’t allow yourself believe you’ve reached the end of your own improvement curve, and
- Know that being a human living with other humans can be bizarre and irrational at its best.
Remember this too—Someway, somehow, we have made this human experiment work for a very long time. Let’s pull together and hang in there so we can see how this movie ends.
And if this drama called life must be one continuous Groundhog Day, we could at least make it a comedic drama. What do you say?
We’re humans and human beings are a work in progress. So, have some fun with it and keep progressing.
Be untucked.
p.s. It’s okay to look forward to the sequel.
