Remember your first band?
Remember how easy it was to start?
You were hanging out with your friends one afternoon… bored, doing nothing useful.
Then one of your friends said, “Hey, we need to start a band!”
And he said it like no one had ever thought of starting a band before.
You immediately, without delay (yeah, I know that’s redundant), began brainstorming names for the band.
Because… you can’t have a band without a name.
Fast Forward.
Using our now, well-established grown-up brains, we all know how hard it actually is to start something. Anything, for that matter. Especially something with as many moving pieces as a band.
Then consider all the competition. There must already be millions of bands. And 99% of them are starving because on one has ever heard them, or heard of them.
Can we all agree that only the lucky few ever make it in the music world?
But, who said “making it” was even the goal?
Of course it was! There wasn’t a soul on the planet who could have convinced us that our band that hadn’t even played a single riff wasn’t going all the way. At least not that afternoon.
But, put that aside for a moment and get back to your grown-up limiting beliefs. The ones you know to be true because you’ve lived them. Because they are true.
Before you can do anything, you have to know what you’re doing, right? Or, is doing it the point?
Rewind.
Ours was, for a brief moment, named “Patchwork Road.” Maybe it was “Night Class?” I’m not even sure what we settled on before we were on to less important steps…
Okay now, who’s going to play what? Who can even play what? Doesn’t matter. We’ll all learn. That was easy. What’s next?
We need a place to practice.
That’s what basements and garages are for. Easy. Done.
We’re rolling now. This stuff is awesome.
It turns out we had a drummer. A real drummer. He had talent and he had a head start. He knew without a doubt that he was going to be a drummer. The head start? — He was the only one of us who knew it was going to take same real work if we were going to pull this off.
It does take work. Hard work. But it’s good work. Because the pursuit is honest. It comes from within.
It also takes a dream. Followed by a journey. A long journey. But one you’ll enjoy.
Each step, each segment, each phase ends with one simple question…
Okay, what’s next?
A journey beginning with the first step, then the next, then ten thousand more. It doesn’t really matter how many…
It’s about the journey, my friend.
It’s as easy to start now as it was back then.
What’s your band?
Dream it. Decide on it. Step on out.
Keep stepping until you’re doing it… Then keep on going.
