But what does that fortune cookie really mean? How will you know?
Have you ever kept your fortune from a fortune cookie? Of course, you have. Everybody has at least one or two pinned to a bulletin board somewhere or under a refrigerator magnet.
Fortune cookies are a required part of a Chinese dining experience. Dinner isn’t over until the last fortune is read. Yes, this tradition applies to take-out orders as well.
And yes, even late at night when eating alone on the floor in front of the television.
Don’t you feel a little bit ripped off if you look in the bag and it’s not there?
I know I do.
Why does something that’s sometimes funny, often a little cheesy, or groan worthy at its best, manage to take center stage?
I’m sure there’s a fortune somewhere in that question alone.
The true prize is that rare fortune that carries a promise so desirable that you’ll save it forever… secretly hoping it just might come true. Just maybe.
You know you have one. Don’t even try to tell me you don’t.
Sometimes a fortune cookie can smack you right upside the head.
What’s your reaction when your fortune feels like it’s speaking directly into your life?
I’m not talking about a blinding flash of lightning or some huge transcendental moment. Just one that gives you pause and makes you stop and think to yourself, “Whoa! That’s weird.”
Not even adding one of the required phrases such as… ‘in bed’ or ‘between the sheets’ will distract you from its message if it feels deeply personal.
A fortune cookie that arrived at just the right time.
Have you ever cracked open one of those? How did you react?
The photo shows my most recent fortune. I thought it sounded mildly prophetic, or maybe a reminder I learned from the past? A few thoughts shot through my mind as I pondered such a heavy message from afar…
- Who is the ‘we’?
- I could get all dramatic and say ‘Oh no, we’ve got to turn around. we’re headed in the wrong direction.’
- What if I want us to end up where we’re headed?
- So, should we change our direction or keep going? What do you think?
- Oh, so you think it could apply to anyone, anytime, anywhere. Well, that’s a buzzkill.
Oh, and it could mean anything I want it too. Well that’s just nice.
Here’s a bonus… Of course, you probably know that on most fortune cookie fortunes, you can flip to the back to get your ‘Lucky Numbers.’ I am here to say that I’ve missed out on many vast monetary fortunes by paying no attention to my lucky numbers… ever.
Bad for me.
But here’s something even better to remember for next time.
Don’t like your said fortune? No problem. Promptly snatch your device from your purse, pocket, or wrist or wherever you happen to keep such digital things and go to yes, SecondFortune.com.
Hey, it’s for the digital age. Just have some fun with it… that’s the important part. I think that’s what some things are meant for, right?
Be untucked.
Still not sure if I should keep going this way or turn around. Hmmm.

Right on! I have this fortune in my stash and it does make me rethink sometimes and make sure I have thought through my direction and goals! Funny you got it too (said sarcastically)! Why do we value them so much? Even my 3 year old grandson tries to understand them!
Jeff Meister says
My theory on why we value them is they give us some level of belief in the possibility of a hope or dream.
