With healthcare and failed attempts at the repeal of Obamacare constantly in the news, pre-existing conditions are frequently front and center in the debate.
“But, how do we handle pre-existing conditions?” is one of the more common questions.
Seth Godin is a master of the metaphor. He can put a thought provoking twist on just about anything that floats to the top in this complex world we live in.
Seth’s Blog published a post on the subject back in May called, what else? “Pre-existing conditions” Check it out here.
These pre-existing conditions are different from what comes to mind and it got me thinking, which is dangerous territory.
We’re not talking about healthcare here; but more so, those bumps and bruises life inflicts along the way.
We all have them. Seth points out.
Of course we all know that, maybe we forget to consider that as we dig our heels in. Maybe because we got lucky. Maybe, because as Seth says,
…all we can do is wrestle with them the best we’re able.
They change us, they make us who we are.
We carry them around strapped to us like a monkey on our back, until we overcome them or give into them.
A badge of honor or a badge of courage?
Some are treatable. Others are just fine as they are. Some we hang onto like old friends. Others we’d do well to let go.
“Goodbye, old friend… be on your way. I’m finished with you. You’ve held me back long enough.”
Regrets. The things that didn’t work out. The things that did. They’re all there wanting to be counted, to play their part.
Some have a pit bull’s lock-jaw grip that won’t let go. Some heal with time.
Sometimes it’s not our choice… many times it is. Is it simply a matter of how you choose to see it?
The truth is they all add and subtract beginning the day we’re born, summing up to the bottom line of who we are. And many times we have as much to do with it as the events themselves.
I would never pretend to know what it’s like to be you or anyone else. It’s hard enough for each of us to get to know ourselves.
It’s still a good question to ask, “What is it like to be you?” It helps me to know you, to understand you. What are your pre-existing conditions? Something worth exploring in these divided times.
Remember… we all have pre-existing conditions in some unique combination like an experiential string of DNA.
Let’s take a look together… then we can start to see what we have in common.
I’m someone who’s allowed the bumps and bruises to hold me back. I would imagine that you have too. It’s a place for us to start to get to know each other.
Sometimes, life cuts deep. It can be unfair. When everyone helps out, life rebounds.
Experiences shape us. Words are spoken. Others left unspoken. And, it’s still a wonderful thing.
Let’s strive to recover from our pre-existing conditions.
