We’ve all been thinking about the end of 2020 since around March!
How are you planning to finish out this crazy, messed-up year? How will you welcome the end of 2020?
You know It’s been a while since I poked fun at what I call success junkies.
SwerveMarketing.com founder, Mike Murphy describes them perfectly in his recent Thrive Global post…
With [their] 4 am miracle mornings and the ‘always on the clock’ selfies from the park as they take business calls when they’re supposed to be with their families, you can sometimes see the false posture of fulfillment right in their eyes. “I’m up before you’re up and I’m still up hustling long after you’ve gone to bed” they proudly proclaim…”
Easy for them to say… they claim hustle to be in their DNA. (Oh wow, did I actually make a rhyme? I’ve got to leave that one in—please accept my apologies!)
Did you know there’s now a thing known as the anti-hustle movement?
Who knew? And it has been around for a while. In fact, I found a blog post talking about the movement from way back in 2016. And it had a dead link back to a 2015 post on the subject. Seems like ancient history, doesn’t it?
Author, speaker, business & data expert, Bernard Marr questioned the strategy of keeping your head down and nose to the grindstone on LinkedIn Pulse in the same year.
Had I known, I would have jumped right on.
The concept of ‘hustling’ has long been popular with entrepreneurs and creatives… Multitasking, working long hours, and surviving on little to no sleep have all become de rigueur for those working on their side dreams.”

Sometimes it’s fun to see what the dictionary has to say about some of the terms that we adopt. The hustle crowd wants to believe they fit the first definition. In truth, the second is more fitting.
hustle
[ huhs–uhl ]
verb (used without object), hus·tled, hus·tling.
- to proceed or work rapidly or energetically: to hustle about putting a house in order.
- to push or force one’s way; jostle or shove.

So, here’s where I’m going with this hustle/anti-hustle thing…
We’re heading into the time of year when those with the gift of hustle like to remind us there’s still time left in the year to end on a strong note. Make the end of 2020 a great one! —Yeah right.
A highly motivated friend of mind actually missed his traditional October 1st countdown to excellence. Perhaps it was because 2020 had different plans?
Maybe COVID-19 has taught us a thing or two about obsessively marking time in our daily planners. The world actually slowed down for a while. Except for some logistical craziness at home, we were finally able to ease up on the grind.”
Once lockdown hit, what we thought was important—wasn’t.
I’m not suggesting that we call it a wrap quite yet. Just keep the 90 days left… 60 days left… 30 days left countdowns to yourself this year. Let it end quietly. We-don’t-need-the-stress. Are you with me?
Let’s not waste this gift, only to awaken years in the future, wishing we had capitalized on the unbelievable time the entire world rebooted.”

Safe to say that genie isn’t going back into the bottle anytime soon—At least not willingly.
So, let’s not be so quick to make a return to what we once labeled as normal. At least not the crazy-busy parts.
Be untucked.
