Hey, enough with trying to take away our snow days, we need them! And did I mention they’re really good for us?
Yep, I’ve been inspired once again to rant about the movement to steal our snow days. And I hope you’re with me on this one, my friend.
We were watching the morning news while a major winter storm was hitting the lower two-thirds of New Mexico and just missing Santa Fe. Then, in come the cancellations… no school, no work, Woo Hoo!!!
Then come the dreaded evil words…
“Remote learning day” and “Remote working day”
Wow! When did that happen? Ohhhh – Yeah, another COVID byproduct. Well, thank you for that.
For generations, snow days meant sleeping in, loafing in front of the TV with hot cocoa, and hours of sledding and snowball fights. Now, they are likely to mean logging into a laptop for a Zoom lesson on long division.”
—Maria Cramer in the New York Times
Man, my heart sure goes out to school-age kids everywhere. I’m telling you; we can’t let this happen. And it’s not just the kiddos who are going to be missing out.
I clearly remember one of my former corporate bosses saying with such excitement, “This is a great opportunity. We can get a lot done today.”
Just think back to all those wonderful moments that came out of a good snow day. I know you’ve got some amazing memories from snow days past. Now savor a few of those moments… let them come back to life. See them. Feel them.
I think I could close my eyes and wander back in time for at least an hour or more from some of mine.
Turn the alarm off – back to sleep – get up mid-morning – bundle up – tromp in the knee-deep snow – snowball fights – snow forts – snowmen – snowwomen – snow-who-knows-what – sledding – freezing your tush – in for hot cocoa – defrosting – back after it – digging out – shoveling walks – shoveling driveways – back in for more defrosting…
Mother Nature knows us well. She’s actually doing us a big favor when she does a major dumping of that fluffy white stuff.
I’m telling you snow days are good for us.
Here are just a few benefits that I found on RealSimple.com…
- Snow days let you sleep in – I mentioned this up top. Most of us just don’t get enough sleep. One snow day won’t catch you up. But maybe, just maybe if you get a taste of a good night’s sleep, you’ll want to get one more often.
- Playing outside counts as good exercise – all that snowball throwing, trekking, shoveling, and what have you qualifies as a real workout.
- Spending the day curled up with a good book may also improve your health and happiness. If snow just isn’t your thing, reading improves your brain functions. Plus you’ll get a mental escape from the stresses of school or the office.
- Snow days force us to take a break – We need to take breaks and most of us don’t take enough. An unplanned, unexpected break where pretty much everything shuts down is the best kind. Call it the BIG AHHHH!
- Having fun is good for you – This is the BIG ONE! When was the last time you had a day full of fun? When was the last time you had more than a few minutes’ worth of fun? Don’t miss this opportunity—get out there, get wet, get cold, and have some serious fun!
Snow days are often some of the best days ever. Wouldn’t you agree?
C’mon, band together! Don’t let them steal our Snow Days!
I’ve always looked forward to the next snow day and I’ll bet you have too. That sent from heaven, unexpected gift of a down day to do anything you want. You love them too, right?
“Advancements” in technology, chemistry, and heavy equipment have already shortened what once would shut an average town or city down for two, or even three days.
Funny how school administrators are all over distance learning, and corporate executives are all for remote work when a snowstorm is approaching. Suddenly they’re the perfect solution!
The unplanned, unexpected gift of a random down day created by a big snowstorm is truly a gift from above. It’s a small thing that helps in a big way.
Don’t give in, my friends—We’ll always need our snow days. And we can’t wait until the snow flies again to fight back.
Enjoying a good snow day to the fullest is one of the best examples of living life “untucked.”
So be untucked… and take that snow day. You’ve earned it.
p.s. My ranting about snow days has happened before. Here’s a post about why we’ll always need snow days. And Here’s one on how to take an adult snow day. Be sure to check them out.
p.p.s. If you know someone who could use a good snow day, maybe share this post with them. We need to band together before snow days are gone forever.
p.p.p.s. This post was written by a real human.
