Momentum is a strange character.
You would think once you get something going, you could start and stop at will. Picking up where you left off shouldn’t be any big deal, right?
Wrong. Dead wrong.
Why? Because momentum begins with action… and when you stop, so goes your momentum.
Have you ever noticed that? You give all you’ve got to building momentum, then all at once something happens that interrupts the flow and that inertia dissolves to a slow rolling halt.
That something, whatever it may be, doesn’t have to be all that big. A bad cold can do it. For me it was a lot of time off around the holidays.
I’m a huge fan of downtime, but it does have its side effects.
Intention is another bugger.
For example, I had every intention of writing a New Year’s post last week. First, I was. Then I wasn’t. Because that’s what you do on New Year’s Day, right?
Wrong again. I found other distractions. So no post.
Intention may even be as fickle as momentum. Both clearly require special care and feeding. Intention by itself is nothing more than perked interest. Again, without a commitment to yourself, followed by… yep, action… then poof! Gone.
Now, here we are, a day late with no post posted. C’mon Man! (Pronounce in Joe Biden style.) Why is this being so hard?
Here’s a possibility…
I absolutely refused (and still do) to get in on the whole 2020 hype bandwagon…
In a normal year, I’m pretty cynical about the whole resolutions’ thing. I mean, “Why bother?” You know the reasons. I know the reasons. Who needs to repeat the insanity?
Now with all the metaphors flying around… 2020 this and perfect vision that, I find myself digging my heels in even further.
Then my contemplative side chimes in… he thinks the whole thing is kind of cool.
I can see that… nobody’s trying to buzzkill all the excitement here.
Does the symmetry of 2020 draw you in? What exactly is it?
Tick. Tick. Tick. 5pm on Wednesday and I’ve spent I don’t know how long trying to get going on this week’s post (that’s still not about 2020).
Fast-forward to 3pm on Thursday… Still tapping away at the keys (and the delete key).
It’s not often when I’m lost for words. Usually, I see something during the week that strikes a chord (or a nerve) and I instantly know, “That’s it!”
We both know there’s enough weirdness going on in this world that something noteworthy should have popped up and said, “Hey, talk about me.”
I vaguely remember a couple of good ideas.
You see, there’s this saying among writers that goes…
When you think it, ink it.”
— I first heard this from writer, Sam Horn
Otherwise, it’s gone… usually for good. You guessed it… didn’t ink it.
You know, this thought just occurred to me. Here’s why those five words work… thinking it is the idea, the intention. Inking it is the action, which will ultimately lead to momentum.
Not to worry though. When I’m in a pinch, I go to my collection of topics, ideas, inspirations, and what have you. There are some great ideas in there, and most may eventually become posts when their time is right… because I inked them.
But none are speaking to me at the moment. Ugh! Could there be a message in there somewhere?
I did mention my contemplative side earlier, he’s clearly got the helm at the moment. That’s fine. After all, it is his time of year.
And that’s not a bad thing either.
Closing out one year and starting up another follows a natural sort of rhythm.
You can go on a deep dive or choose just to wade in the waters for a while. It’s your call. Maybe it’s the same with all the 2020 mania.
Could also be just an end of a year thing followed by a beginning a year thing.
Apparently, I need to ponder that for a while longer (intention), but I expect I’ll end up joining in the 2020 fun after all (action), and have a go at it (momentum).
What about you? You in?
Until then, I’m hoping you have a rockin’, untucked New Year!
