Biding time… stuck waiting for normal… what’s the point in that?
It’s time to stop looking backward and to stop biding our time. This is our moment.”
—Jason Feifer, Editor at Entrepreneur magazine
What Exactly Are We Humans Waiting For? Why are we stuck?
Our time is now. Not last year. Not next year. Sure, we feel better being hopeful about 2021 and rebooting this train wreck of a mess we’re in, and that’s okay.
Think about things for a moment. What we have today is all we have today. Wouldn’t a better strategy be living intentionally were we are, where things are, right now?
The only time we have is now.
Here’s the thing. The normal we knew isn’t coming back. I believe that’s a safe bet, don’t you?
In the past months, we’ve had more time on our hands that we’re able to deal with. Yet still, not enough time to be satisfied.
Yes, we were also led to believe this COVID thing was temporary. First a few weeks. Then a couple of months. Then what? No wonder so many of us throttled back the best we could—to wait it out.
When you consider expectations going in, waiting (read pausing) felt like a good plan. Until it wasn’t anymore.
Sometimes messages show up in unexpected places.
Two compelling articles came my way this morning in a way that I had no other option than to take note. Okay, okay, I guess I could have ignored them altogether. That’s always an option with our daily media feeds. (Most likely the better option now that I think about it).
One came with the simple lesson ‘if you wait, you may wait forever.’ And the other was about ‘the unlived life.’ Hmmm.
The first was the Editor’s Note in the new issue of Entrepreneur magazine. Go figure. I wasn’t expecting such thoughtful wisdom there.
I realize all this might sound a bit heavy, although it doesn’t need to be.
Instead, let’s call it intentional, but practical reframing.
The second was a post by Steven Pressfield, author of the iconic book for creatives, The War of Art. In the book, he coins the term ‘resistance’.
Resistance is that invisible force that kicks in to prevent us from doing almost any form of creative work from writing, creating art, or standing up a new enterprise.
The unlived life may sound deep, but it’s really not.
The practical world we all live in every day is made of, as Steven says, “kids and cars and mortgages and taxes.” All of that had become especially acute due to the pandemic.
But the unlived part is made up of “the books we might write, the enterprises we might initiate, the realized self we might become.” This unlived life is perfectly content staying in its simplest form—potential.
(Steven’s post is raw and honest. If you’re up for it, check it out here).
So, stop being stuck waiting like you’re at a bus stop in the rain.
The message today is this. None of us expected such a bizarre and trying year, we simply weren’t prepared. Kicking into ‘waiting mode’ was a perfectly understandable response.
And you know what. What we’re experiencing today may well be inconvenient, exhausting, challenging, and what have you. But what we still have isn’t so bad.
Is it easy? No. Is it perfect? Oh, hell no. So what? When was the last time either of those existed?
Remember that “good stuff” you’ve been saving? Go get it and enjoy it now.
What are you waiting for?

THIS! Your writing summed up everything I was feeling! I have given myself permission to enjoy something-anything really- and stop waiting for the government to tell me when life can resume! What a liberation! Keep on thinking and writing! I don’t always respond but I ALWAYS enjoy reading your thoughts!

Hi Marilyn, Thanks for reading! You are right on with giving yourself permission to enjoy ’anything really.’ We all have those favorites we really miss doing, but staying stuck waiting is no way live this part of life. And remembering to enjoy the little things in our everyday lives is, like you said, ’liberating’!

Such — as in, SUCH — a timely reminder, Jeff. Gives me the push I need to do some things that have been on the back burner. Thank you!
