Sure, it’s a harsh question. But one worth asking.
You would think novelist Elmore Leonard’s advice, “leave out the parts people skip” could also be good advice for living well… but the problem is, too many people skip the good parts.
Remember Jimmy Buffet? He built an empire on the concept of taking it easy. When was the last time he heard the words, “Uh, Jimmy! We’re going to need you to come in on Saturday.”
We’re tired and there’s too much work. We keep being duped into believing we have to do it all.
We make too many commitments. The reality is, by saying yes to one thing we’re also saying no to something else… usually to something we prefer.
We’re constantly bombarded by too many distractions.
We give away our attention as if it doesn’t even matter.
And there’s the noise. Too. Much. Noise.
You stretch out to take a quiet nap. But as you try to relax you hear the cars, the jets overhead, screaming kids, jake brakes from the big rigs, sirens, the rattle from the refrigerator, noises you can’t even identify.
The world is moving too fast… it’s hard to even think some days.
I’ve fallen behind, and I can’t catch up”
– almost anyone
We adopt the flawed mindset, everyone else is busy, so we should be too. But, we’re already too busy. There’s just too much to get done. It’s time to step back and learn one of the hardest words to say… a simple “No” followed by “I can’t this time.”
For all of that day-to-day minutiae that consumes your life… why not let others help you? Outsource to those who need the work and can help you by taking a load off. Both of you will win and both of you will feel better.
Let the others worry about how to cram more in.
Make the most of what’s here and now. The small things usually end up being the most memorable.
I love this quote from author, Gretchen Rubin…
The days are long, but the years are short.”
She puts our days and years into perspective, doesn’t she?
Have you noticed how we insist on putting the good times in past tense?
Do you remember the good ol’ days?
Man, I sure do. One of them was just the other day…
Don’t skip the good parts. There are plenty still to be had.
